But in the world of sex, that is undoubtedly untrue.

Premature ejaculation (PE), one of the more prevalent sexual problems in men, can cause sexual unhappiness or even lead to the end of a relationship.

PE is defined as a condition in which ejaculation happens during sexual activity earlier than either a man or his partner would anticipate, according to sexologist and sexual health professional Dr. Rachael Winston.

“It could happen less than a minute after having sex.”

Dr. Winston cited a number of studies to support his claim that while the precise origin of the illness is still unknown, low levels of certain hormones, such as testosterone or serotonin, may be a contributing factor.

“A brain’s high serotonin levels can prolong ejaculation, while low serotonin levels cause PE, which is typically transient.”

On the other hand, PE is typically associated with a more psychological and biological point, according to Dr. Winston.

Stress, despair, anxiety, guilt, relationship issues, low self-esteem or a negative body image, worries about their sexual performance, and unfavourable thoughts about having sex are examples of emotional elements.

According to her, “biological factors that may contribute to premature ejaculation include having inherited traits from their parents, inflammation and infection of the prostate or urethra, and abnormal hormone levels.”

She claims that anxiousness among “inexperienced” males who are unable to control their sexual urge might also cause the disease.

“It could result in a guy ejaculating after a few thrusts due to a short intravaginal ejaculatory latency time.

“A scenario like this could make the female partner feel guilty and lead her to believe that the male partner is acting self-centeredly and that she is just a vehicle for his sex pleasure.”

According to Dr. Winston, a woman with PE may experience distress and dissatisfaction as a result of her partner’s sexual behaviour, which is increasingly dictated by time rather than enjoyment.

“The woman may also avoid sexual contact as a result of this, fearing rejection and not having her sexual needs met.”

Dr. Winston cited recent research that revealed that 25% of the women had previously had a breakup in their relationships due to untreated sexual issues like PE.

According to her, “PE can have emotional consequences such as distress and dissatisfaction with the overall relationship, not only for men but also for their partners, in addition to reduced sexual satisfaction.”

Who is most likely to get PE?

As per Dr. Winston, males between the ages of 20 and 60 are frequently affected by PE, which is a transient problem.

As they have more experience (in having sexual intercourse), it can typically be resolved psychologically for the younger age group.

“However, it’s typically accompanied by other sexual disorders like erectile dysfunction or inflammation of the prostate in the much older generation.”

How should one proceed?

Even though PE is a transient ailment, Dr. Winston advised seeking medical assistance if it is interfering with one’s ability to enjoy sexual activities.

Treatment methods for premature ejaculation include behavioural techniques like masturbating one to two hours before sexual activity to assist lengthen the sexual encounter.

“Using certain condoms, like ‘climax control’ condoms, can help reduce penis sensitivity and also help postpone ejaculation.”

As an alternative, Dr. Winston suggested using anaesthetic sprays and creams on the penis 10 to 15 minutes prior to intercourse to lessen pain and eventually postpone ejaculation.

“Sildenafil (Viagra), an oral medication used to treat erectile dysfunction, may also be helpful.”

Finally, Dr. Winston stated that addressing individual and couples’ relationships and experiences is typically a requirement of the counselling technique.

“By lowering performance anxiety, this can help men manage stress much more effectively.”
