The regular kidney bean is extracted from the Phaseolus vulgaris plant. Another sub-species is the Cannellini bean or common bean, which is white in coloring. Due to cultivation the plant can be found many places where there is well-drained soil that is close to neutral mild acidic pH. The beans are also used in food and can come in different colouring such as white, red, blackish, yellow, brown and speckled.
The white variety of the kidney bean is mainly used for culinary benefits and not for its health benefits although it is rich in protein and is an excellent source of amino acids needed in the human diet. In Africa, the beans are also called “meat of the poor” due to its high nutritional content.
The kidney bean is a rich source of chromium, which helps maintain appetite and blood glucose levels. Aside from these, it is also used as an aid for diarrhea, diabetes and hiccups.
The tablets come in a large torpedo size pill and is not recommended for those who have difficulty swallowing.
